This third-generation, family-owned company continues to earn its reputation every day by supplying “Mission Critical” systems to the world’s leading Defense and Aerospace companies.

GTC was founded by William J. Kramer, Sr. to support the Cincinnati area manufacturing industry. Mr. Kramer received his apprenticeship certificate for machining at the age of 19; and, eventually, became the “Metal Trades” instructor at St. Bernard High School. He became a leading advocate of vocational training in the city and in various national metalworking trade associations as well. To gain practical experience, students made parts for local companies such as Procter and Gamble. With encouragement from his contacts at the larger manufacturing companies, Bill started his own machine shop in 1947 with 6 employees in a 5000 square foot building in the suburb of Reading, Ohio. General Tool Company is still in the same location, but the company has grown to 275 team members occupying 5 buildings that total 300,000 square feet.

During the visit, Congressman Wenstrup viewed a wide range of precision components manufactured by GTC that support critical U.S. military and aerospace programs. These included parts destined for aircraft carriers, Navy destroyers, ship-to-shore hovercraft, F-35 fighter jets, SPY radar systems, GE aircraft engines, and nuclear submarines, among many other programs.

Company leadership also highlighted GTC’s recent growth, noting that employment had expanded to nearly 300 employees in the months leading up to the visit. The growth reflects increasing demand across defense and aerospace platforms and GTC’s continued investment in advanced manufacturing capabilities and workforce development.

Now in its third generation of family ownership, General Tool Company has spent more than 72 years supporting the nation’s defense industrial base. The company remains proud of its long-standing role in providing mission-critical hardware that helps protect the American warfighter.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GENERAL ATOMICS SELECTS GENERAL TOOL COMPANY
TO PROVIDE CRITICAL HARDWARE FOR FORD-CLASS CARRIER

Cincinnati, Ohio – October 1, 2018 – General Tool Company (GTC) announced today it has been selected by General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) to deliver critical hardware for the Navy’s Ford-class aircraft carrier, the future USS Enterprise (CVN 80).

This procurement will include Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) items such as the motor support structures, trough covers and other associated components. This award supports GA-EMS’ full production contract award by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) for delivery of EMALS and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) systems for installation aboard CVN 80, the third of the U.S. Navy’s Ford-class aircraft carriers. EMALS and AAG have been installed on USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), which recently completed sea trials.

EMALS is a complete launch system designed to replace the steam catapults. The electric motor-based AAG system provides for aircraft deceleration during aircraft carrier recovery operations. EMALS and AAG are designed to launch and arrest a broad range of aircraft, while providing higher reliability, greater efficiency and lower maintenance.

General Tool Company is a defense and aerospace subcontract manufacturer located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Founded in 1947, GTC’s team of experts has supplied welding, precision machining and assembly services to Fortune 1000 companies in support of their most mission critical programs. For more information, visit GTC’s website at www.gentool.com or contact Peter Borden at (513) 733-5500.

GA-EMS is a global leader in the research, design, and manufacture of first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ history of research, development and technology innovation has led to an expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions supporting aviation, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and processing and monitoring applications for critical defense, industrial and commercial customers worldwide.
